One of the busiest times for you as the host of the baby shower is that you need to be thinking about what shower decorations to make or purchase for the party, what will be the planned events, such as what games to have, what types of baby shower favors you will use, and what kind of foods and beverages will you be serving.

Traditionally the baby shower cake has been used as the table centerpiece during the baby shower party. Of course there are other options such as a diaper cake but for now we are focused on the edible type of cake. Make an effort to ensure that the cake for this occasion hasn’t just been brought from the the local bakeshop as this could be offensive to the mother-to-be.

Make sure that either you as the host or one of your talented guests makes the cake for the mother-to-be. In this way you will know that the cake has been made to fit the theme of the baby shower and also will be a perfect fit for the table centerpiece during the baby shower.

If you have to pre-order the baby shower cake it is better to meet with the person who will be creating this special cake, after all it is a very special day. In doing this you will have peace of mind that the cake will be designed the way you require and it should be organized well before the commencement of the baby shower party.

If you are hosting the baby shower on a budget, then maybe you should whip about that old cake recipe book and see how well you can follow instructions. The benefits of this are you know what you want and if you follow the recipe correctly you should end up with exactly want you want. This will also have the effect of keeping the costs of the baby shower down for all concerned.

Before deciding on how you are going to make the baby shower cake maybe you should consider a fast research trip on the internet. Here you will find a huge array of ideas and designs to make the baby shower cake stand out from the crowd and making the mother-to-be very happy with the result.

The most popular colors for the baby shower cake are pink, yellow, blue, white and green with the design of the cake usually reflecting a flower, baby toys, butterflies and even birds. Again though you can come up with many ideas after using the internet to research this topic.

If the baby has already arrived you might consider having a photo taken of the little one and then having that placed on the top of the baby shower cake using edible icing. This can be placed on top of the cake whether you have created it or you have had the cake ordered.

Using a diaper cake is another great idea when hosting the baby shower. Yes you heard right it is a cake made out of diapers and usually serves as the table centerpiece during the shower party. Once the shower party is finished it also provides the family with a large number of diapers for the first weeks of baby being home.

For those that are craft minded maybe you would try your hand at creating your very own diaper cake. Yes its a cake that is made from baby diapers (not the eating kind). All you need to do is purchase some diapers that are rolled lets say to three levels, if you have done this before you can go up as high a seven layers. When securing the diapers make sure that you do not tie the ribbon or lace to tightly as this will deform the diaper and not giving you the desired affect and will probably have to be thrown out.

The table centerpiece would now be your masterpiece the baby shower diaper cake for all to enjoy during the baby shower. For those that have decided on creating or purchasing their own custom cake this to could become the centerpiece of the party ensuring a fun and enjoyable day for all.

With all the hardest decisions made you need to decide a few more things such as if the males are attending if this is the case then maybe a barbecue could set the scene. Its a great time for all the males to get to know each other while standing around the barbecue. If it is just a girls only affair then maybe just some lite snacks, tea, desserts and a nice punch will do just fine.

Clotted cream is a rich and creamy dairy product most closely associated with England, but you can find variations of it just about anywhere. It’s considered a luxury item that is usually served over scones, desserts and fresh fruit and is one of the staples of English-style afternoon tea. Here are 5 things you never knew about this wonderful creation.

#1) It’s clotted, not whipped. It is made by straining very fresh milk into a pan and then allowing it to sit for several hours, while the cream rises to the top. The following step is to simmer over low heat until crusty-golden “clots” form that seal the cream inside. The clots are then skimmed off to make clotted cream, and their golden color comes from the butterfat content in the whole milk. Because it comes from unpasteurized milk, clotted cream made this way will only last about four days, if refrigerated.

#2) It probably originated as early as the 1500s in England. The locals needed a method to preserve fresh milk that was not going to be used right away. Since that time, the process for making it has barely changed.

#3) For authentic clotted cream, you need to begin with unpasteurized milk – otherwise the clots will not form. Today, however, large commercial preparers of clotted cream use pasteurized milk and mechanical separators to extract the cream from the cow’s milk, thus bypassing the need to allow the cream to rise slowly on its own. The clotted cream made from pasteurized milk has a much longer shelf life.

#4) It must contain at least 55% milk fat, and can be used as a luxury substitute for butter.

#5) It is most closely associated with southwest England, specifically the counties of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. The breed of cows they raise there (for example, Jersey type) produce milk with a high fat content, ideal for making clotted cream.

If you ever have the opportunity to attend a traditional Afternoon Tea, be sure to look for this inspiration from southwestern England – it will probably be near the strawberry preserves and lemon curd.

If you have a problem with bad breath, green tea can help. In addition to the many healing properties of green tea, it also aids in the relief of halitosis, or what is commonly called “bad breath. “

The reason many people have bad breath is because of bacteria in the mouth. We all have bacteria in our mouths, but when it grows out of control, it gives you bad breath. Some people are plagued by bad breath no matter what they do. They cannot seem to combat the bacteria in their mouth and continually have bad breath, despite brushing their teeth and using mouthwash regularly. However, recent studies have shown that you can fight bad breath with tea.

Over the Counter Remedies Do Not Work!

Most over the counter remedies for bad breath merely mask the problem. They do not get to the root of bad breath which is really just an excess build up of bacteria in the mouth. In order to truly get rid of bad breath, the bacteria have to be gotten rid of.

Loaded With Antioxidants!

Because green tea is loaded with antioxidants, it has healing powers that can eliminate harmful bacterial infections in the body. If you have an abundance of bacteria in your mouth, you may be able to keep it under control and fight bad breath with tea.

The antioxidants will raise your immune system and allow your body to naturally combat the offensive bacteria that is making your breath so bad. After a few days of drinking green tea, you will begin to notice a difference in your breath as the bacteria that was taking over your mouth is kept under control by your immune system.

Removing Plaque!

In addition to helping your immune system clear up some of the excess bacteria, drinking green tea can remove plaque that builds up in your gums and between your teeth. Sometimes, just brushing your teeth alone is not enough to remove plaque. Plaque is another major contributor to bad breath. Drinking tea can end up not only curing your bad breath, but also keeping your gums and teeth in better shape.

Another reason for bad breath lies within the throat. If you have large tonsils, they may harbor bacteria. Again, drinking green tea will help fight off this bacteria. Once you start drinking green tea you will notice that you have fewer colds and sore throats. Your throat will also not feel as dry in the morning when you wake up.

If you find that you are plagued by bad breath, stop resorting to gums and breath sprays that only mask the odor but do nothing to resolve the problem. Start on a healthy regimen of drinking green tea regularly to keep your immune system healthy, eliminate plaque in the mouth and fight bad breath with tea.

APPETIZERS

When guests arrive at a baby shower they are expecting a food selection that includes desserts, appetizers, and some kinds of finger foods. A baby shower that will be held at noon or at dinnertime usually calls for a full meal, while early afternoon or early evening showers can do with appetizers, salads, and finger foods. Remember that plentiful appetizers can be made in replacement of a full meal that you might otherwise serve.

Memorable shower appetizers can be as complicated as baked spring rolls or as simple as rolled sandwiches cut into bite size pieces. Avoid pre-made appetizers like mini quiches and breaded items like coconut shrimp, as these do not stay well on a buffet. There are baby shower recipes for cakes, cookies, appetizers, and much more to be found online, as well as recipes for appetizers & drinks for the next baby shower you host.

FINGER FOODS, SANDWICHES AND OTHER IDEAS

If the shower is taking place around a mealtime, you may want to consider either serving a proper sit down meal or more substantial finger foods. Nonetheless, the usual baby shower food ideas are comprised of snacks, finger foods, grilled foods and barbeques, punches, cakes and desserts and other types of food depending on the general idea of the baby shower party theme. Finger foods are best served on such occasions, as they are easy to handle. Finger food can include vegetables and dips, mini sandwiches, sausage rolls, and crackers and cheese. Of course, what is a tea party without some finger sandwiches. Prepare finger foods that are easy for guests to pop into their mouths without getting their fingers too dirty. Otherwise you’ll have lots of dirty napkins, and perhaps some fingerprints or stains on the furniture as well.

If you want to keep it more casual with a light buffet, sandwiches are always a great option. But you don’t have to stick to the old stand-bys of egg salad sandwiches on white bread – you can get creative with the fillings, shapes, and bread styles. Serve the sandwiches with a fruit tray (or fruit salad) and a veggie platter.

Summer baby showers are a great opportunity for traditional summer foods like a BBQ, potato salad and/or cole slaw. In the summer heat, however, the only things you worry about are mayo based dishes like potato salads or pasta salads with mayo if temperature is an issue.

DESSERTS

And finally…the desserts – the second-most popular guests at the shower! Eating desserts at a party is one of the few times people can enjoy the sweet luxury without feeling guilty about it. So don’t disappoint the crowd by going light on the desserts. Cakes are always great, or you could make and decorate some cupcakes or cookies, depending on the expecting mom’s preferences. If time is a consideration, you can just order a cake or baby-themed cookies a few days ahead of time from a bakery, and you will be all set with no baking required.

Another idea is to design a cake and make it look like children’s toy blocks (either one large block or 3 to 4 smaller blocks). These could be arranged on a pretty cake board to spell out your baby shower message. And speaking of ‘cakes,’ a dessert table centerpiece that is popular in baby showers is a diaper cake which is constructed of diapers and lots of attached baby trinkets. Betty Crocker may not be needed for this particular project, but a diaper cake does make a wonderful addition to any baby shower. But you can read more on baby shower decorating in a different article!

Another highly popular main dessert, and one I’ve seen actually replace an actual cake on the table, are petit fours. Petit fours are small cake-like pastries (usually) made with almond flavored cake, filled with fruit preserves, and then covered with poured fondant and decorated. They are beautiful and delicious – but watch out, they are often expensive.

Some other treats that you may want to consider include iced cookies, chocolate squares, and bowls of seasonal fruit. Other smaller desserts can be displayed around the baby cake in a continuing theme. The treats that are served can be as sinful as possible or they can be on the healthy side.

For more information, we recommend going online to find more great baby shower ideas for your next big party. Leveraging the knowledge and experience of others will make your life easier and make the big event even more special for the mom-to-be.

Bridal Showers are an important part of the wedding planning. They offer a bride a fun time to relax along with her close friends and relatives. They also help the bride in establishing her home by receiving practical gifts. A bridal shower is usually held about four to eight weeks prior to the wedding. Usually, the bride is consulted before setting the date unless it will be a surprise party. Many times a bride will have more than one bridal shower to attend to, so it is always better to involve her in the planning. Remember the objective is to offer her a relaxing experience and not to stress her out. The shower is usually hosted by the maid of honor, bridesmaids, close friends, or relatives. It can be an all girl party or a couple’s event which is referred to as a “Jack and Jill” shower. Bridal showers can take place at a home, restaurant, spa, or even at an outdoor area such as a park or beach. Bridal showers can be planned around a particular theme. The bride’s interest should be considered in choosing a theme. Some popular themes include tea party showers, lingerie showers, kitchen item showers, around-the-clock showers (where everyone is assigned a time of day for which to select a gift) and travel gift showers. Here are some tips to help in planning the bridal shower.

Time
Bridal showers are usually an afternoon event. They can take place during the week as well as on the weekend. Guests that are co-workers tend to prefer a week day event. Closer friends and family may elect a weekend instead. It is usually a good idea to have some type of consensus before sending out the actual invitations. Also, remember to always check with the future bride’s schedule first.

Menu
Typically, showers held at a home would in include some type of finger food. These could include appetizers, fancy dips, salads, and soup. Showers held at a restaurant may have more elaborate food and showers held out in the open may include a barbeque. Also, the food should somehow follow the theme. For example, a beach or luau theme would go great with Hawaiian type foods.

Decorations
The decorations should complement the theme. If it is a tea party, lace and delicate flowers can used to accent the tables. For a beach party theme, gel candles and seashells can be spread around the tables. A kitchen theme party can be accented with fruit centerpieces. The colors used in the bridal shower decorations do not necessarily have to follow the wedding colors but could be an option.

Games
Games are not necessary but they serve as ice breakers for guests that are not that familiar with one another. Avoid games that get too personal and can embarrass your guests. Small prizes are usually handed out to the winners. Following are three fun game ideas.

Bridal Dress Competition -The guests are divided into small groups (3 to 6 people). Each group is given 3 rolls of toilette paper rolls and is asked to design a wedding dress. One person from the group is chosen as the model and will have to walk down a runway showing the dress. The bride chooses which dress she likes best.

Bridal Bingo – Make “Bingo Cards” with 25 empty spaces. Each guest should write in the gifts that they think the bride-to-be will receive. As the bride opens the presents, any matches should be marked on the card. When the card is full, the guest wins a prize.

Clothes Pin Game – Each guest receives a clothes pin upon arrival and are told that if they catch someone saying the word ‘bride or wedding’ they can take their clothes pin. At the end of the shower the guest with the most clothes pins wins a gift.

Favors
Bridal shower favors are not necessary but make your guests feel appreciated. They do not have to be as elaborate or expensive as those given as wedding favors. Many inexpensive favors can represent your particular theme. For example, personalized tea packs or coffee packs can be given out at a tea party shower. A nice idea for an all girl party may be pretty compact mirrors.

Do you like sticky ginger cake with a nice cup of tea, but are left disappointed with shop bought varieties? If so, you will greatly appreciate that this particular recipe is both straightforward to prepare and cook, and the end result is wonderfully satisfying.

You can bake this ginger cake in one of two ways depending on who it’s for.

You can use either 2 loaf tins greased and lined (or ready made linings as it is much easier) or use 1 18cm round greased and lined deep tin. The amounts are the same for both ways but the baking times will be slightly different. The 2 loaf tins take about 50 minutes and the deep tin takes about 1hr.

1. Preheat your oven to 180c/160c for fan assisted ovens/gas mark 4.
2. Grease and line your chosen tin(s).
3. Make sure the rack in the oven is in the middle of the oven to make sure the ginger cake is evenly baked.

Ingredients

8oz/225g self raising flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tablespoon of ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground mixed spice
4oz/125g butter cut into cubes (plus extra for greasing the tins)
4oz/125g dark muscavado sugar
4oz/125g black treacle
4oz/125g golden syrup
9 fl oz/250ml whole milk
3oz/85g drained stem ginger, grated finely
1 egg

Method

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and all the dry spices in a large bowl. Do not be tempted not to sift the flour, as the bicarbonate of soda will stay in clumps and not disperse through the cake.

Add the butter and rub it onto the flour mixture with your hands until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Put the muscavado sugar, treacle, syrup and milk into a large saucepan and put it on a low heat, keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved, then turn up the heat and bring the mixture to just below boiling point so it does not burn the sugars or it will be bitter, take off the heat.

Mix in the grated stem ginger into the flour mixture thoroughly coating it well.

Carefully pour in the treacle mix into the flour mixture (it will bubble as there is bicarbonate of soda in the mix) stir as you go and mix with a wooden spoon.

Break in the egg and beat the mixture well.

Pour the ginger cake mixture into the prepared tin(s)

Bake the cake for around 50 minutes and check it by pushing a clean skewer into the middle of the cake until it comes out clean.

When cooked leave it in the tin(s)until cool then turn out.

Keep the cake(s) in the paper that you have baked them in but put a clean one on as well for presentation, the cake(s) will keep for about 2 weeks if put in an airtight container or if you prefer you can freeze them by wrapping in greaseproof paper then cling-film or large food bag, it will keep well for around a month.

Once you and your family and friends have tried this delightful ginger cake recipe, the chances are it won’t last that long and you will find yourself making another one very soon!

Top tips

When you place the ginger cake in the oven, cover the top with greaseproof paper for 30 minutes to prevent the top of the cake going too dark. Remove the greaseproof paper from the top of the cake during the last 20 minutes of cooking time.

If you like it more gingery put in more stem ginger not too much or it will be heavy.

Ginger cake is best served with custard, single white cream, or enjoyed on its own with a fine cup of tea.

Before any of my children began school, I used to know it was 4 p.m. without even needing to look at a clock. Naps were over, children were whining for food and fighting with each other, and I was trying to make my way to the kitchen to begin dinner preparation. When my oldest daughter started Preschool, not much changed during “the witching hour”, as I’ve heard it frequently and ruefully called. During the cold months, I would occasionally give hot chocolate with an afternoon snack to get the children through to dinner.

However, I am not crazy about beginning a lifelong habit of daily hot chocolate. They consume enough sugar throughout the day. When Kindergarten began, she would get off the bus right at 3:45. This was just in time for the most challenging part of the day. One day in November, when there was a perfect chill in the air and I was in no mood for the typical behaviors of the hour, I suggested on our walk home from the bus stop a hot cup of tea.

I told them I had a new flavor that I thought they would really like. We went home and put the teakettle on to boil. Meanwhile, all 3 of my children sidled up to their stools at the counter where they usually sit for breakfast and lunch. While waiting for the whistle and for meat to defrost, Campbell told us how school had been, and Clark and Claire let her know what fun things we had done during the day.

While the tea steeped and I peeled carrots and potatoes, we were chatting and laughing together. Finally, our Chai was ready. After a little sugar and a little milk, we were sipping our teas together and feeling relaxed and settled. The tea (and the occasional tea cookie) helps tide the children over until time for dinner. We have continued our tradition of afternoon tea everyday. My little Claire wakes up from nap asking if it is time for tea. Campbell steps off the bus with the question, “Can we have tea?” Clark has so become accustomed to the idea of teatime that he goes straight to his stool as we enter the door. Even on the weekend, the children are sure to remind me of teatime. It has become a part of our day and a part of our lives.

On this rakhi festival let us learn the technique of making Rakhi for the Kids.

Before you start, keep the following list of tools and items ready with you -

Accessories like small toys, Cartoon Characters (small cuttings), Funny Stickers or pictures like Spider man, Pooh, Hanna Montana, Mickey or Krish etc.

Glue or Fevicol.

Raw silk Thread or ready Silk motifs.

Silk ribbon of different colours.

Sharp Knife /Blade/Pair of scissors.

Glittered Stars or beads.

It is fairly simple to make Rakhi for Kids. For new bees it may take make 30 minutes to make Rakhi. For professionals it is barely 10 minutes activity.

Take approximately 12 inches of two strips of narrow satin ribbon of different colours. You may choose the colours based on what kind of motif you are going to use in the centre.

Stick both pieces of ribbon alongside each other so as both the colours are visible. This gives strength to the Rakhi and makes it look more beautiful once it is complete.

Now take the thick bunch of silk thread.Tie it at one end with raw thread and brush it hard so that it becomes soft. Now hold it from the knot and spread the threads carefully and evenly to give it a nice round shape of a Sun flower. You may shred the extra uneven threads.

Alternately you can use readily available silk motifs as a base if you want to avoid above work. Once it is done, Take the band made out of satin ribbons and stick the above made sunflower/readymade silk motifs with the glue in the middle as a base for sticking toys or stickers etc.

Now your base for the Kid’s Rakhi is ready, enhance it by sticking toys, stickers or pictures etc of your choice on the motif or sunflower silk base.

Also glue glittered stars or beads along the rakhi band.

Leave your Rakhi to dry now and wrap it in a cellophane sheet. Preserve the Kid’s Rakhi for Rakshabandhan.

Green tea gained its popularity all over the world because of the health wonders it can give your body plus it has been included by other people in their diet as a weight loss tea. Studies have proven that green brew can prevent a person from having cancer; it also lowers blood pressures, improves the immune system and reduces hypertension. However, there have been many teas that were proven capable of giving these same benefits such as the Oolong tea.

The distinction between oolong, green, and black tea depends on the way it has been processed after being collected. The differences on those teas are also important to consider when you want to know the best weight loss brew. The medium colored one, meaning the one between green and black is the Oolong tea. Also, all of them except white tea originated from the same plant which is the Camelia sinensis, a plant that contains antioxidant. If processed and made to a brew, several compounds perform as antioxidants including catechins, flavanoids, and polyphenols.

What really is the difference between Green Tea and Oolong? Can both of them be regarded as a weight loss tea? If ever, which one acts better as a weight loss tea?

The Difference between the two teas is that the oolong is underwent a semi-oxidation process while green tea is un-oxidized. Since the catechins lessen when oxidized then green tea has higher catechins compared to Oolong. However, when catechins lessen, there is a boost in theaflavins and thearubigins. These two compounds are higher in Oolong. Also these compounds have extra benefits such as anti-cancer and anti-allergy. It seems that there is more edge to oolong tea than in green tea.

Another research was conducted in 1993; A Japanese study evaluated the benefits of Oolong tea and Green tea as a weight loss pekoe. The teas were boiled in to the water. The Oolong lasted long compared to the green tea leaves that were eventually dissolved. Scientist began taking measurements and results showed that the Oolong tea had higher EE levels. In layman’s term, the result proves that after drinking oolong tea, you will most probably burn more energy that will last up to two hours than if you were to consume green tea. When it comes to caffeine, green tea had more caffeine than Oolong.

The polymerized polyphenols that associates brew to burning fat is superior in oolong tea

If you really wanted to lose weight but still undecided on what weight loss tea to get to complement your diet, I strongly recommend Oolong tea rather than green tea. Although both teas have a lot of similarities, when it comes to weight loss, the most effective weight loss tea between the two is the Oolong beverage. It can burn more fats in your body.

Remember that it’s better to have more benefits and Oolong can give you that. Having more nutrition in your body will definitely do you good. With the proper lifestyle plus cups of Oolong tea, you are on your way to a healthier living.

A Victorian nursery rhyme says “Sugar and Spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of.” Hosting a Sugar and Spice Tea Party is a great way to have a lot of fun while pretending to be grown up. Children can help with preparation activities such as like preparing finger sandwiches, decorating cookies, to arranging flowers as place markers at the table. Guests can be invited to bring dress up clothes or vintage style hats or, alternatively the hostess can furnish a selection of dress up items (look at your local Goodwill for some great items at little cost).

The dressed up ladies may enjoy participating in a treasure hunt. The hostess hides a jewelry box full of old fashioned costume jewelry (brooches, necklaces, bracelets, etc.) – the perfect fashion accessories for the dress up game. Then, provide riddles or poems to help the children figure out where the items are hid. Each clue takes them to another, and to another, and so on. For example, a starting clue could be something like: “Welcome ladies, a treasure you will find, if you follow all the clues that I have left behind. Ring! Ring! Hello? If you need to find the phone, where would you go?” Of course the guests will head straight to the nearest phone where another clue tag hangs waiting for them. Other clue hiding locations could be in plants, under chairs, behind pictures, in the garden, anywhere inside or outside that you can think of. Make the clues easy enough the guests can find them quickly and have enough clues to run around having fun. Finally, have them find the jewelry box and then they can all put on jeweled accessories to go with their hats and dresses! Or, alternatively, you can have various plastic gems, trims, and other shiny decorative items in the jewelry box and then have basic wood cutouts with jewelry pins attached on the back of them. The guests can design their own jeweled treasures by gluing stones, trims, laces, and other shiny items onto the wooden shape cutouts. Each guest then has a great keepsake of the Sugar and Spice Tea Party afternoon. Once they have their proper accessories, it is time for the fashion show. Put on some music, create a run way and watch them model their fashions. Taking digital pictures will allow you to send each of the young ladies home with pictures of their modeling debut.

One last game that is fun and easy to set up is a tea cup relay. Divide the guests into two teams. Put a tea cup on a table behind each team of guests. Give each guest their own sugar cube to hold. Then, give one team member a tea spoon (the smaller it is the harder!). Each member will place their sugar cube on the tea spoon and run the relay race track without touching the sugar cube with their hands (if it falls off, they can use their hands to pick it back up). Then, when they get back to the beginning, they drop their cub into their team’s teacup and pass the spoon to the next member in line. First team that gets all their cubes in their teacup wins.

Finish the Sugar and Spice afternoon off with a sit down tea party complete with cups, saucers, fresh flowers, and some sugar and spice cookie treats. This party will be one each of the guests remember for a long time. Enjoy!
