Tall Ships Race 2009 – Atlantic Challenge

This summer's Atlantic Challenge Tall Ships Race began on May 3rd under excellent conditions. The vessels will race until August 16th through seven race legs.The ships will cover a total of 7,000+ nautical miles, following 500 year-old trade routes.On their initial journey they'll benefit from the reliable, westward trade winds. With peaks to 13 meters per second (30 miles per hour) they should provide for spectacular racing conditions.The vessels began the race in Spain's busiest fishing port, Vigo. The first leg of the race will see them travel 900 nautical miles south-south-west to Tenerife, the Capital of the Canary Islands archipelago. They'll begin arriving on May 14th.After four days, the armada's off to the 21sq. mile island of Bermuda - 2,600 nautical miles to the west.
