Iced tea is an American Invention, but the idea came from the early 1800's in England when tea punch was being made. The ingredients for the punch were black or green tea and a great deal of liquor. Cold tea without liquor was made in the United States once refrigeration was possible.The formal debut for iced tea was merely due to circumstances. It was a particularly hot year for the World's Fair held in St. Louis in 1904. The East Indian pavilion was offering free hot tea to visitors but they were not accepting it readily. Everyone wanted something cold to drink to deal with the heat of the day. Richard Blechynden was the India Tea Commissioner and ran the pavilion.
